Patients would like to contribute to research

Patients would like to contribute to research

People with diabetes would like to participate in public and commercial research, contributing to the development of new insights into diabetes and health technology. This is one of the results of a new study among the members of the Danish Diabetes Association. Biopeople has supported the project financially.

Biopeople’s director Per Spindler states: “Through EUPATI Denmark and the national programme “Biomarkers as an emerging growth area”, Biopeople wishes to promote even more collaborative projects, putting the patient and the user at centre stage. This is an example of a study giving us new insights in patient involvement in clinical research".

The role of patients in medical research

The role of patients in medical research

Participant in trials and/or co-creator of new medicines in research projects? Patients’ roles are changing – what are the challenges? Biopeople co-organises debate on Folkemødet/The People’s Political Festival in June.

Without patient participation, no research into development of new medicines. That is why loads of laws and regulation are protecting the patient as a trial participant, a research object.

However, the winds of change are blowing: Patients are increasingly assuming new roles as co-creators and co-developers of new medicines. They are invited to decision making on research priorities and trial designs to fit patient needs and lifestyles. But what are the demands made by this new role?

Join our panelists in this debate:

Mogens Hørder, Professor, University of South Denmark

Lars Østergaard, Lead Clinician, Aarhus University Hospital

Birthe Lemley, patient, the association Women with reproductive cancers

Kristian Johnsen, Director, Danish Diabetes Association

Ane Hendriksen, Managing Director, Velux Foundation
