The conference in Nyborg looks mainly at the underlying mechanisms causing variability in clinical response and drug toxicity. We talked to organiser Tore Bjerregaard Stage about the line-up of speakers and his expectations.

Tore Bjerregaard Stage is assistant professor at Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacy at University of Southern Denmark where he received his training as a pharmacist.

In 2015, Tore Bjerregaard Stage received a Sapere Aude-Research talent award from the Independent Research Fund, which provided the initial funding for the First Nordic conference on personalized medicine. He is the chair of the meeting and the main organiser along with Professor Kim Brøsen.

Q: Who should be interested in attending this conference?

A:"This conference is relevant for researchers and health professionals with an interest in personalised medicine. Personalised medicine is a very wide concept and at this conference, we look mainly at underlying mechanisms causing variability in clinical response and drug toxicity."

Q: What are you especially proud of in relation to the conference?

A: “I am very proud of the scientific program. We have managed to get a number of leading researchers not only from the Nordic countries, but also from Europe and the US. During the initial planning, I did not expect to be able to attract so many leading figures from the field to Denmark, but we received an overwhelmingly positive response from all invited speakers.

It is an amazing opportunity to mold a conference after my own preferences and I am very much looking forward to attending the conference.”

Q: Which speakers do you not want to miss?

A: “This is very difficult to answer, as I think all the invited speakers bring highly novel research to the programme. If I had to choose my favourite, our keynote speakers Ewan Pearson and Alex Sparreboom represent two aspects of personalised medicine. Dr. Pearson has a unique clinical insight into the pharmacogenetic basis of treating diabetes, while Dr. Sparreboom uses novel models to assess mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced toxicity. This knowledge can be implemented to personalise treatment with these drugs.”

The facts: First Nordic conference on personalized medicine

The First Nordic conference on personalized medicine takes place from 30 May – 1 June 2018 in Nyborg, Denmark.

This 3-day conference will focus on both basic and clinical aspects of research regarding personalized medicine, featuring a program of talks and workshops within pharmacogenetics, drug interactions, epigenetics and other factors that may cause variation in drug response among individuals. Furthermore, methods available across the participating researchers will be in focus.

This conference is an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues and possibly establish international collaborations. More information will be added continuously on this website: www.norpm2018.com
