Profile of the month: Mosspiration
What is the background for your company/research?
The Fragrant Moss or the use of moss as a fragrance producer was made as part of a research project between 2011 and 2014. The project was in part funded by Firmenich, as world leading fragrance producer. It lead a happy life in the petri-dishes until 2016 in different research projects, when the idea of the "Natural Air Freshener" was launched. We collaborated with creative people in San Francisco throughout 2017 to get this right, and one company came and went again. After several attempts, we now have more fragrant versions and with even stronger fragrances within several types of glass jars.
The fragrant moss is based on all these years of research and engineering efforts. We are continuously improving the moss, and will also during 2019 provide new fragrances. Our hope is that at some point, we don't need unnatural air fresheners, but can use green living air fresheners with a fragrance that we have designed.
Already now, we are experimenting with combining the fragrances to make our own unique fragrance mix. As soon as we are satisfied, and our perfumer Zarko Pavlov (from Zarko Perfume) is happy with it, we will also launch this.
A second goal of the company is still to provide an alternative production platform for fragrances used in perfumes. This part of the research is now focused on upscaling the production, and establish this at an economically viable level. A new platform here will replace the big plantations currently used for this product and provide a more stable and secure supply for the perfumers.
Describe your company/business area/area of research?
The aim is dual. 1 to provide a living green air freshener alternative for private consumers. 2. To provide a novel production platform of fragrances (see above).
What makes your company/research group unique?
To the best of our knowledge we are the only company in the world that provide living plants with designed fragrances to directly to private consumers. Secondly we work with plant synthetic biology, which is not that common in EU due to the regulations.
What is your future goal/hope/dream?
For the Air freshener the goal is to get this on the shelves of all Ikea, DIY, flowers shops in the world (maybe excluding EU). TO provide a fresh green alternative for everyone.
For the fragrance production, it will be to deliver the new key component for Zarko’s next block buster or maybe for Chanel.
What Is your ‘burning question’?
We really really want to find a way to get this production of fragrances established at large scale. It is a combination of process technology and cellular engineering. But that is our key burning question – why does this still not work for us. We have started a small collaboration with DTU Chemical Engineering, but more is needed.
